Water & Drain Pipe Repair & Replacement
Pipes are the arteries of your home. They pump in water and take out waste. When they aren't working properly, you're in trouble. And as they age, weaknesses become apparent.
Domestic water pipes are made out of several different materials - copper, brass, galvanized steel and PVC. If the pH in your water is not normal, it can be corrosive; breaking down copper, brass, or galvanized piping. Galvanized pipes can also fall victim to calcification and rust build up, causing restricted water flow and poor water pressure.
Drain and waste piping can clog up with calcification, iron build up and sludge, often making it easier to replace than clean or repair. Cast iron pipes crack under duress and will sag if not properly installed. All of these situations can jeopardize the strength of your pipes, the flow of water and waste, and ultimately lead to deterioration of your plumbing.
Our technicians are experts in the field and can diagnose, repair, and replace any type of water and drain piping.

Frozen Pipes Thawed & Repaired
Let's face it; the Hudson Valley gets pretty cold during the winter months. And sometimes, when the weather drops below zero and the wind picks up, pipes can become susceptible to freezing.
Frozen water pipes are a serious risk to your home plumbing system. When water freezes in a pipe it expands and can exert pressure over 2,000 pounds per square inch. If left alone this can crack or burst the pipe, as there is no place for the ice to expand. Burst pipes can wreak havoc in your home once they thaw, spilling excessive water and causing considerable damage.
If you are unfortunate enough to experience a frozen pipe, call Russell B. Bleakley Plumbing & Heating, Inc. We have the tools and the know-how to thaw those pesky pipes before they cause major damage, and repair any cracked or burst pipes that occur as a result of freezing. We also offer winterization services for homes that are not used during the winter months. After all, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

If you’ve got a sump pump problem or just want the peace of mind knowing that everything is in good working order, give is a call. Water contaminants vary greatly based on your particular location. Your water quality can be affected by many factors including oil refinement, landfills, gasoline storage, farms, dry cleaners and factories as well as natural conditions like salt water. Many areas in the Hudson Valley particularly homes that run on a well system have naturally hard water, but can also be prone to many other ailments.
Here are a few indicators of bad water:
Suspicious smells - chlorine, musty, rotten egg, gasoline
Suspicious taste - metallic, salty, acidy
Suspicious appearance - rusty, cloudy, green staining on fixtures, discoloration of your porcelain or cookware
Blackening and pitting of steel sink
If your water displays any of these poor water symptoms...don't delay! Call Russell B. Bleakley Plumbing & Heating, Inc. today to schedule your water system consultation. 914-276-3756

Radiant Heating Systems
Why are radiant floor heating systems so comfortable?
The answer is simple. Warm floors are created by warm water pumped through plastic pipe in the floors. This type of heating is known as hydronic radiant floor heating (HRF).
How does it work:
Often a boiler provides water that is pumped through the plastic tubing which turns the floors into a large low temperature radiator. Other sources of heated water such as hot water heaters, waste heat recovery systems, solar hot water heating, etc. may be used instead of depending on the boiler, Heat is transferred evenly and quietly from the floor. Since the heat comes from the floor your feet are never cold and the heat stratification associated with forced air heat is almost non existent.
How is it controlled:
A thermostat or sensor controls a valve that opens and closed to allow heated water to flow into a zone and maintain the temperature set for the time period set. HRF systems are easily zoned which can save significant amounts of energy
Common Methods of Radiant Floor Design:
Slab on Grade - Tubing is generally tied to rebar or meshing. Top of radiant tubing is generally 2 to 3" under finish slab.
Suspended Floor - Tubing is tide down to the wood sub-floor and then covered with gyp-crete or mud set.
Under Sub-floor - The tubing is attached to the underside of the sub-floor with or without metal heat transfer plates
Common Uses for Radiant Heat:
Residential and Commercial Radiant Floor Heating - heat every foot in your house, office or building. This system has also been known to be used for melting snow on roofing.
Snow-melting - Our ice and snow prevention systems automatically melt snow and ice by circulating antifreeze through piping embedded in concrete or beneath brick pavers.
Electric Floor Warming - "Spot warm" smaller areas using a low profile, easy to install electric heating mat, It's low profile (1/8") barely raises the floor height, making it perfect for new construction and remodeling.
Advantages to using Radiant Heat:
It's Clean. Doesn't stain walls form dirty forced air. Doesn't have grills on the floor that collect toys, crayons, food, dust balls, etc. Doesn't blow or re-circulate dust and pollens. Doesn't collect cobwebs or spiders like baseboard.
It's Safe. Kids cant get their fingers caught in radiator grills or baseboard heaters.
No sharp edges to clean.
No Cold spots in the house.
Gas fired Boiler or Furnace Questions
Everyone has got an opinion on weather gas is better than oil. And you always hear the gas company promoting (even offering great deals on conversions) propane and natural gas. We know that electric is clean but very, very expensive as the primary source of heat. So we're not talking electric. So let me tell you about gas.
Yes! Gas is clean
Gas burns very efficiently and cleanly. The efficient is rated at up to 98%. Ventilation of fumes are more efficient than oil systems. Even the parts for repairs are getting less expensive. Gas heaters can be a boiler or furnace.
Yes! Gas is safe
Gas is safe. Naturally if it is installed correctly it's safe. But here is something to reflect on.
TWO TYPES OF GAS Natural and Propane
Natural Gas is preferred only because it's atomic weight is lighter than air. Soo...if there is a leak the gas will dissipate in the air and rise. And if it does accumulate it would be in the attic, which is normally ventilated..
However, being that propane gas is heaver than air, and if a leak occurred (inside or out), the vapors would seek the lowest spot, which is your basement. The accumulation of the gases can be ignited by electrical switches in the basement. So this in not such a good scenario for the home owner.
The control on the gas and gas line installations are strictly regulated and enforced and adhered to for obvious safety concerns. Because of this control, there are no more gas explosions than there are oil explosions.
The Cost: With any commodity, the price fluctuates. So to compare operation costs would be difficult. But here are some advantages with gas.
It is cleaner than oil (for our environment too)
Fuel cost similar to oil
Replacement part cost less than oil (typically)
Less yearly maintenance & upkeep
House requires less maintenance oil leaves sooty residue inside house on walls)
Here is a question we received from a customer we would like to pass on to you. If you have questions,
e-mail us and ask questions
Question:
I have a Heil high-efficiency gas furnace. A few months ago, the
inducer motor came on, but no hot air began to blow. I called the
repairman, who told me that I had a clogged pilot orifice, and that this
was an unusual problem. Now I am concerned about two things:
1. What caused the problem in the first place?
2. Is this likely to happen again? I was home the last time this
happened, so I caught the problem immediately. What if I'm not home and
the inducer motor keeps running? Will it overheat? Is this dangerous?
Sincerely,
Susan
Answer:
The motor will not over heat. you don't need to worry about that.
The other question, yes it is likely to happen again, but not until the the furnace sits for the whole summer again.
Because the furnace is not used over the summer months you get a little condensation in it and this can cause the very thin orifice to clog up.
This is not unusual at all, and is nothing to worry about. If the repair person cleaned it out good enough, you will not have anymore problems with it for the rest of this heating season.
Baseboard
Why Baseboard?
Heat from a baseboard heater is clean. No air-bourn particals generated from source.
Profile extends no more than 2" from wall.
Fits in any decor
Energy efficient
High Trim
Weil-McLain High Trim Baseboard is designed for installation where heat loss is high or wall space is limited. High Trim is ideal in any building where these conditions exist, not only because of high output and strong durable construction, but also because styling and precision manufacturing result in an exceptionally clean-lined, well-fitting and attractive baseboard. Available in modern baked white enamel.
Therma Trim:
Weil-McLain Therma Trim Baseboard is designed for hydronic heating
installations in homes and apartments. It is an attractive, clean-lined, functional baseboard that fits into any decor from traditional to ultramodern. Therma Trim is finished in a modern white baked enamel, but may be painted to match woodwork or walls.
Enclosures
Therma Trim enclosures are made of pre-coated cold-rolled steel and are available with or without the element in lengths from 2 to 8 feet.
Snug Baseboard:
Weil-McLain Snug Cast Iron Baseboards satisfy the standards of good heating engineering. Since it is essential to comfort that the cold outer wall be blanketed as extensively as possible with a source of heat, Weil-McLain baseboard panels most effectively fulfill this requirement.
Finned Rear Surface:
For balanced heating, a portion of convected heat is necessary to supplement the radiant heat emission. Weil-McLain Snug Baseboards are well equipped in this respect. The fins in the rear of the units provide an ample surface from which to emit warmed air.
Forced Hot Air
For forced hot-air heat, metal ducts are used to carry the air to in-room registers. A blower or fan is used to push the air through the ducts to its destination. This fan cycles on and off with the furnace and is responsible for keeping the hot air from backing up into the system. Timed to cycle off shortly after the burner shuts down, the timing of the fan is what keeps cold air from being pushed through the system, as well. Equally important to the production of hot air heat is the return air supply that is used to fuel the system. It is essential that the amount of air space dedicated to the supply (hot) and return (cold) air be the same in a forced air system.
Forced air heat is always immediate, arriving with a burst to heat the air in the room that calls for it. Forced hot air travels along trunks and branches to reach its destination. When the burner fires, the fan distributes the hot air to open pathways and registers. Dampers placed along the trunk at branch locations prevent the hot air from entering certain zones when they are closed.
Hydro Heating Questions
With domestic hot-water or hydronic heat, supply and return issues center on water and the pipes that carry it. With hydronic heat, the boiler fires and heats the water to an average temperature of 180°F to 200°F for baseboard heat and 80°F to 85°F for radiant floors. This hot water is pushed through copper or PEX tubing via a circulator or pump. As it travels through the house, heat is either transferred to slats or "fins" located along the pipes in baseboard registers or transferred directly to a wall panel, the floor or ceiling. Return water re-enters the boiler at a temperature of 110°F and is carried either through its own return pipe or through a series of registers culminating at the boiler.
In a hydronic system, heating by room is controlled via thermostats and zone valves installed on the supply pipe to encourage or prevent hot water from entering a given loop. Some systems have individual circulators for each zone, sending hot water to that baseboard or heating zone only when called for by the thermostat.

Knocking or Banging pipes keeping you awake at night?
Steam heating systems can be very temperamental. We have the knowledge and experience to solve knocking and banging pipes: a common nuisance with steam systems. The knocking and banging is often caused by improperly pitched pipes or radiators; or, improperly installed system piping.
The Advantages of Steam Heat
Steam and hot-water heating systems have few moving parts, making them more reliable and durable if properly maintained…often more reliable than newer, more complicated heating systems. They also provide clean and dust-free heat, a huge plus if you or members of your family have problems with dust and other allergies.
Boiler Systems Operation
In steam heating systems, a boiler heats water by means of a gas or oil-fired burner and turns it into steam. The steam travels through pipes to radiators or convectors, which give off heat and warm the room. As the steam cools, it condenses back into water, and returns to the boiler to be heated again.
Steam Heating Systems Maintenance
While one of the advantages of boiler systems is their long life, these systems should still be serviced no less than annually to ensure trouble-free operation. At Bleakley Plumbing, we:
Check the safety valve, and pressure or water level gauge;
Check the controls;
Inspect & adjust the burner;
Inspect the chimney & flues for possible blockages or leaks;
Check the air valves to regulate the heat;
Make any and all necessary repairs;
Recommend and install a new boiler when the old one runs out of “steam.”

Check the safety valve, and pressure or water level gauge;
Check the controls;
Inspect & adjust the burner;
Inspect the chimney & flues for possible blockages or leaks;
Check the air valves to regulate the heat;
Make any and all necessary repairs;
Recommend and install a new boiler when the old one runs out of “steam.”
